# Five messages that answer the open question after an investor meeting

Send it the same day, answer the question you could not answer in the room, and make the next step easy to agree to. The five messages below cover a short thank you, an answered question, a reference offer, the investor's reply and a formal note.

An investor follow up has its best chance when it is short, arrives the same day and closes something that was left open. Answer the hard question in writing, send what you promised, and name one next step. The fourth message is for the other side of the table. Each is complete as written.

## Five messages, by situation

### A one liner, when the meeting went to plan

Fits a meeting with no open questions.

> Yusuf, thank you for the time today. The one page summary is attached, and the revenue figures you asked for will follow by Friday.

### A three sentence note that answers the open question

Fits a meeting where a question went unanswered.

> Yusuf, thank you for the meeting at Bosphorus Growth Partners on Tuesday. You asked how we would reach cold storage partners in the Gulf, and the short answer is through two pilot sites with a bonded operator. The detail is in the attached summary, and I am happy to walk your partners through it.

### One with a concrete offer

Fits an investor who has moved into diligence.

> Yusuf, one thing that may help your diligence. Salma Qattan at Jalwa Fresh Logistics has agreed to a half hour call with anyone on your team. She can speak to how the pilot would run in bonded cold storage.
>
> Send me two or three times that suit next week and I will set it up.

### One from the investor, warmer in tone

Fits when you are the investor and a founder is waiting to hear.

> Amani, thank you for the time after the agritech demo day, and for answering my questions on cold storage so patiently. I am still interested, and I am taking Mavuno Agritech to my partners next Tuesday.
>
> Whatever we decide, you will hear it from me by Friday 16 October, not from silence.

### One in a more formal register

Fits a senior partner, or a firm that writes formally.

> Dear Mr Demirkan,
>
> Thank you for receiving us at Bosphorus Growth Partners on Tuesday. As discussed, please find attached the financial summary and the customer references.
>
> We would welcome the opportunity to present to the investment committee at a time that suits you. I remain available for any further questions in the meantime.
>
> With kind regards,

## What to change in every version

The question: use the investor’s words, not your paraphrase.
The promise: a date you will keep beats an early date you will miss.
The ask: one next step, not three.

## Where Marrow fits

Tell Marrow what you promised and by when, and it sets a follow up with that date and reminds you when it is due. Ask it for a draft and it writes one from what you told it, marked not sent. You send it yourself, because Marrow does not send messages on your behalf. Marrow is in Beta. If your round already runs through a tracker your whole team uses, keep that; Marrow is a personal tool.
