What is a warm introduction?

A warm introduction is when a mutual contact connects two people and vouches for one of them, ideally after checking both want it. Checking with both sides before making it is known as the double opt in.

The double opt in

  • Ask. You ask your contact for the introduction and give them a short note to forward.
  • Check. Your contact asks the other person whether they are open to it.
  • Introduce. The introduction happens if they agree, and not otherwise.

An example

Amani Wekesa of Mavuno Agritech wants to meet Yusuf Demirkan of Bosphorus Growth Partners. She asks Daria Kowal, who has interviewed Yusuf, and sends a note Daria can forward unedited. Daria checks with Yusuf, he agrees, and the introduction goes out.

Afterwards

Reply quickly, move the introducer to bcc, and tell them later what came of it.
