Five thank you messages to send the same day as the coffee

Send it the same day, name one thing they said that you will use, and keep it short. If you promised something over coffee, put it in the thank you.

A thank you after coffee is short and specific: one thing they said, and what you will do with it. Send it the same day. If you promised something across the table, the thank you is where it goes. Each message below is complete as written.

Five ways to say thank you

A one liner, for a casual coffee

Fits a relaxed meeting with a peer.

Benedikt, thank you for the coffee at the port authority open day. The next one is on me.

A three sentence note about their advice

Fits a coffee where someone gave you their time and judgement.

Daria, thank you for the coffee and for your advice on pitching regional stories. I am going to rewrite the opening of my proposal around the trade route angle, and I will tell you how it goes. If I can return the favour with a contact on the shipping side, say the word.

One with a concrete offer

Fits a coffee where they mentioned a problem you can help with.

Ines, thank you for the time this morning. You mentioned that teacher training is the bottleneck, so here is the case study I talked about.

If it would help, I can also introduce you to a school group I advise that has just trained its teachers on new courseware. Reply with a yes and I will make it happen.

One for a warmer relationship

Fits a friend who listened to you think something through.

Leila, that was the best hour of my week. Thank you for listening to me think out loud about whether to take on a retail client. Same place next month?

One in a more formal register

Fits a senior contact who made time during a visit.

Dear Mr Fakhoury,

Thank you for making time for coffee during your visit to Dubai. Your view on rooftop systems for hotels was particularly helpful.

I will follow up on the introduction we agreed by Friday, and I hope we can meet again when you are next in Dubai.

With kind regards,

Keep it short

  • One specific detail beats a paragraph of gratitude.
  • Do not ask for a second meeting in the thank you unless they suggested one.
  • If you promised an introduction, make it within the week.

Where Marrow fits

Leaving the cafe, tell Marrow in a voice note what you discussed and what you promised by when. It logs the coffee and sets the follow up for that date. Ask for the thank you and it drafts one, marked not sent. You send it yourself, because Marrow does not send messages on your behalf. Marrow is in Beta. If you have coffee with a contact once a month, your own memory may serve just as well.

The request Draft a short note to Salma Qattan sending the pilot pricing for the cold storage trial, and Marrow's reply: Here's the draft to copy and send yourself, then a subject line, a greeting, thanks for the call on Thursday 1 Oct about the pilot scope, the pricing for the cold storage trial, a sign off with the user's name, and the line Not sent, it's yours to send
